Cheaver's monthly guide to the latest updates from Claude, ChatGPT, Copilot, and Gemini

September was the month AI assistants stopped waiting to be asked. All four platforms shipped agents that keep working in the background, and the newest models got smarter while getting cheaper. Here is what you need to know.

  • Anthropic released Claude Opus 5.5 and Sonnet 5.5 and brought Cowork into every Claude conversation.

  • OpenAI launched GPT-6 Astra and "dots," always-on agents that keep working between conversations.

  • Microsoft rebuilt Copilot into one app with Home, Code, and a background agent called Autopilot.

  • Google shipped Gemini 3.8 Flash and began replacing Gems with reusable skills.

Claude (Anthropic)

Claude Opus 5.5 and Sonnet 5.5: Frontier Quality at a Lower Price

On September 22, 2026, Anthropic released Claude Opus 5.5, which performs at the level of its top model, Claude Fable 5.1, on most work. It costs 40% less to run than Opus 5. Sonnet 5.5 followed on September 28 as a faster, lower-cost option. Together they make high-end AI practical for routine business tasks, not just special projects.

Claude Fable 5.1 and Mythos 5.1: The Most Capable Claude Models Yet

On September 1, 2026, Anthropic launched Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Mythos 5.1, which it calls its most advanced models for coding and knowledge work. Fable 5.1 is also available inside Microsoft Copilot, so many teams can use it without a separate subscription.

Cowork in Every Conversation: No More Choosing a Mode

On September 16, 2026, Claude Cowork became available from any conversation. You can ask a quick question or hand Claude a bigger job, such as a report or spreadsheet, without switching modes first. Your projects, connectors (links to tools like email and file storage), and skills carry over. It is rolling out to Pro and Max plans.

Claude Design, Slides, and Docs: Polished Deliverables in Any Chat

Also on September 16, Anthropic made designs, slide decks, and living documents available in every conversation, on every plan including Free. You can edit them with Claude or directly, and teammates can work on Claude Docs together. Enterprise owners must switch these features on first.

Salesforce in Claude: Your Pipeline Inside the Conversation

On September 15, 2026, Anthropic launched a Salesforce plugin in beta with 37 pre-built sales skills. Sellers can prep calls, review deals, build pipeline dashboards, and send forecasts from Claude. It is available on paid plans for organizations Salesforce approves through its beta.

Smart Reports: See Where Your Team Gets Value

On September 10, 2026, Claude Enterprise added smart reports in beta. They show the work your team gets done with Claude, what it costs, where people hit friction, and which repeated tasks are worth turning into shared skills.

ChatGPT (OpenAI)

GPT-6 Astra: Stronger Help on Complex, Multi-Step Work

On September 3, 2026, OpenAI introduced GPT-6 Astra, with gains in research, coding, and computer use. It can build documents, spreadsheets, and presentations that follow your templates and adapt when requirements change. It includes extra safety checks that can pause a task if it may have misread your instructions. Astra is included in Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise plans.

Dots: Always-On Agents That Keep Working Between Conversations

On September 29, 2026, OpenAI introduced dots, persistent agents (AI assistants that complete multi-step tasks on their own). You give your dot a goal, connect the apps it needs, and set what it may do without asking. Each dot runs on its own cloud computer and brings results back for review. Dots are rolling out to eligible Pro and Business Premium users.

ChatGPT for Word: Drafting and Editing Inside Your Documents

On September 17, 2026, ChatGPT arrived in Microsoft Word on all plans, including Free. It can draft from notes, summarize a document, revise selected text, and fix headings and formatting from a sidebar. Word joins Excel and PowerPoint in the same add-in.

Box, Dropbox, and SharePoint: Work From Files Where They Live

On September 10, 2026, Box, Dropbox, and SharePoint joined Google Drive in ChatGPT's file library. You can search and add files to a conversation without uploading them again, and even work across a whole folder at once. Existing file permissions still apply.

ChatGPT Images 2.5: Faster, More Precise Visuals

On September 8, 2026, OpenAI released Images 2.5 with sharper detail, more precise editing, and faster generation. New templates and a mobile Sketch tool let you draw a rough idea and turn it into a finished image. Small marketing teams can produce on-brand graphics with fewer rounds of edits.

Custom GPTs to Plugins: Plan Your Migration Now

On September 11, 2026, OpenAI announced it will retire custom GPTs and offer a migration path to plugins, which combine instructions with connected apps. Existing GPTs keep working until the retirement date for your plan. If your team relies on custom GPTs, now is the time to list them and their owners.

Copilot (Microsoft)

A New Microsoft Copilot: Home, Code, and Autopilot in One App

On September 25, 2026, Microsoft unveiled a rebuilt Microsoft Copilot app. Home brings chat and Cowork together, Code lets non-developers build their own solutions, and Autopilot is a background agent that runs a task end to end, such as an RFP response. Home and Code roll out first to Microsoft's Frontier early-access program, with Autopilot in private preview.

Office in Copilot: Real Word, Excel, and PowerPoint Files

The same update adds full Word, Excel, and PowerPoint creation and editing inside Copilot. You can ask for a launch brief, a budget model, or a deck, and Copilot produces a real, editable file that your whole team can work on live. That means no more copying drafts between apps and fixing broken formatting.

GPT-6 Astra and Claude Fable 5.1: New Models in Cowork and Copilot Studio

On September 1 and 4, 2026, Claude Fable 5.1 and GPT-6 Astra joined the frontier models (the most capable AI models available) in Copilot Cowork and Copilot Studio. Both are grounded in your files, meetings, and chats through Work IQ, within existing permissions. Fable 5.1 replaces Fable 5, so anything you tested on the older model is worth a quick re-test.

Cowork App Skill: Build Simple Apps From a Description

Copilot Cowork gained an App skill in the Frontier program. You type /app, describe what you need, then refine, publish, and share a small interactive app with your organization, with no code required.

New Name and Web Address: An Action Item for IT

The Microsoft 365 Copilot app is now simply Microsoft Copilot, and its web address is moving to copilot.cloud.microsoft. Remaining users are redirected in early October 2026. IT teams should allow the full *.cloud.microsoft domain so no one gets locked out.

Gemini (Google)

Gemini 3.8 Flash: Smarter Everyday Model at the Same Price

On September 2, 2026, Google released Gemini 3.8 Flash, with major gains in reasoning and multi-step tasks at Flash-level speed. It is available in the Gemini app for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers. Developers should note that its API prices are scheduled to double on January 1, 2027.

Skills in Gemini: Reusable Instructions That Replace Gems

On September 30, 2026, Google introduced skills, saved instructions you run by typing a forward slash and the skill's name. Unlike Gems, you can stack several skills in one prompt and attach reference files such as PDFs. Skills reach Workspace starting October 5 and the Gemini app starting October 13, and Gems will be migrated automatically over the coming months.

Gemini 3.8 Live and Live Avatar: Real-Time Voice and Video Agents

On September 15, 2026, Gemini 3.8 Live became generally available for real-time voice conversations. On September 24, Live Avatar added a lip-synced, expressive video persona in Gemini Enterprise that works in 97 languages. Businesses can use it for customer service or guided walkthroughs.

Gemini on Android: Find Hub Memory and Guided Vision

With the September 2026 Android update, you can tell Gemini where you put important items, like a passport, and add a photo. Gemini Live Guided Vision describes what is in front of you and helps in low light or with fine print, available as an accessibility shortcut.

More Connected Apps: Gemini Reaches More of Your Tools

A new wave of Connected Apps lets Gemini help manage projects, design assets, and more. You turn them on in Gemini settings or call them with an @mention in your prompt.

What This Means for You

1. You Can Now Hand Off a Goal and Come Back to Finished Work

ChatGPT dots, Copilot Autopilot, and Claude Cowork all keep working after you close the chat. Start with one recurring task, such as a weekly status summary, and review the result instead of building it by hand.

2. Top-Tier AI Quality Now Costs Less for Everyday Tasks

Claude Opus 5.5 delivers near-top results at 40% lower cost, and Gemini 3.8 Flash narrows the gap with premium models. If you held back on advanced AI because of price, it is worth a fresh look for routine work.

3. Your Office Documents No Longer Require Switching Apps

Copilot now edits real Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files, ChatGPT works inside Word, and Claude builds decks and docs in any conversation. Try drafting your next proposal or budget inside the assistant you already use.

4. Your Team's Know-How Can Be Packaged Once and Reused Everywhere

Gemini is replacing Gems with skills, ChatGPT is moving custom GPTs to plugins, and Claude is flagging tasks worth turning into shared skills. Write down your brand voice or a key checklist once, then reuse it across every request.

5. Your AI Can Work Directly From the Systems You Already Use

Box, Dropbox, and SharePoint now connect to ChatGPT, Salesforce runs inside Claude, and Gemini added more connected apps. You spend less time exporting and uploading, and more time acting on answers.

6. Simple Internal Tools No Longer Need a Developer

Copilot's App skill and Code tab let anyone describe a tool and get a working, shareable app. A small tracker or calculator that once waited in an IT queue can now be built by the person who needs it.

The Bottom Line

September marked the shift from AI as a chat window to AI as a coworker that keeps going while you focus elsewhere. The tools are ready, but the payoff comes from people who decide what to delegate and review the results. I recommend picking one repeatable process this month, capturing it as a skill, and handing it to an agent.
